Amidst a giant round of layoffs at Warner Media on Monday, DC Comics and DC Universe did not escape unscathed. And DC Direct, the 22-year-old consumer product division, was closed completely.
On the DC Comics side of the sweeping changes, Editor-in-Chief Bob Harris, senior VP of publishing strategy and support services Hank Kanalz, VP of marketing and creative services Jonah Weiland, VP global publishing initiatives and digital strategy Bobbie Chase, senior story editor Brian Cunningham, and executive editor Mark Doyle, have all been reportedly removed from their positions within the company. Jim Lee escaped the cuts and remains in place as the CCO.
The total cuts are said to be equal to about one-third of the editorial staff. “DC Universe was DOA as soon as the AT&T merger happened,” an unnamed source told The Hollywood Reporter. The evidence had been building for this move, but all we are missing now is an official final statement as to what will happen with the service. Will the online comics archive survive? We’ll just have to wait and see.
And in one of the biggest surprises of the Monday movements, DC Direct is reportedly being shuttered. Some had suspected this was coming when Warner Bros. Consumer Products was becoming more involved, but there’s still no real indication if anything will carry over. Will statue series such as Batman Black & White or DC Bombshells continue? We just don’t know yet.
The timing of this move couldn’t come at a worse time with DC FanDome less than two weeks away. The announcements are sure to overshadow certain portions of the show as we will more than likely still not know all the ramifications of all of these changes.
DC is not offering any comments on the reports as of this time.
