EAST ALTON – Tyler Lafferty has been named the superintendent of the East Alton Parks and Recreation Department.
The announcement came at last week's East Alton village board meeting.
Lafferty began his parks and recreation career right after high school, working as an umpire. While attending Western Illinois University he worked as a program director for Camp Lincoln in Minnesota. After earning a master's degree in Public Administrations, he worked for the Parks and Recreation Department of O'Fallon, Illinois, starting in January 2020.
According to Lafferty, he was leaning towards engineering when he was considering college. He credits conversation with his previous boss, Stacy Silkwood, for planted the seed of change.
"The more and more I talked to her, I realized that, all that time when I was a kid, I was the neighborhood kid that organized every game," he said. "I didn't realize you could make a career of bringing the community together."
Due to the small staff of the East Alton department, Lafferty said his position as superintendent will have him wearing "a lot of hats". Next on the radar is the upcoming 27th annual soapbox derby scheduled for Sept. 10. Lafferty is seeking grants and sponsors for the event, as well as others that may have been dormant in the village since the COVID precautions of 2020.
Lafferty officially starts his job Monday, Aug. 15 and said he is both excited and antsy.
"I've had old teachers and classmates reach out in support, which has been amazing," he said. "I'm ready to get started and hit the ground running."
Robin Carlton, Adult/Seniors Event Coordinator for the East Alton Parks and Recreation Department, said she believes Lafferty will bring "good and exciting things" for the community.
"To see him still have that love and desire, it will be a positive thing for the city," Carlton said.
