There haven’t been many fireworks coming from Thousand Oaks this offseason as the Los Angeles Rams have remained relatively quiet since trading for Matthew Stafford earlier this year. They did re-sign Leonard Floyd and added DeSean Jackson, but most of their work will come in the draft.

With less than two weeks until the big event, I fielded questions from followers on Twitter and answered the best ones in this week’s mailbag. Some were about the draft, while others were about Stafford and the team’s forthcoming alternate uniform.

Biggest beneficiary of QB change?

This is a good question. Stafford loves to throw it deep and while DeSean Jackson will obviously be the Rams’ primary downfield threat, I think Robert Woods stands to benefit from the change to Stafford.

Woods isn’t a burner, but he can still win over the top with his savvy route running and the way he sets up defensive backs by selling underneath routes. Whether it’s on posts, corners or straight-up go routes, Woods will make more plays down the field with Stafford under center than he did with Jared Goff.

Expect an uptick in Woods’ yards per reception next season. Cooper Kupp and Van Jefferson will benefit, too, but Woods could be in for a big year.

Why the lack of interest in LBs?

I’m kind of surprised Kwon Alexander, Avery Williamson and K.J. Wright are all still available because they could each help a team right now if signed. Alexander is an especially intriguing player for the Rams, given his range and speed; he needs to improve his tackling and angles, though.

It’s become clear since 2017 that the Rams don’t prioritize linebackers. Since trading Alec Ogletree, they haven’t put a big emphasis on the position. And after seeing them rank No. 1 in the NFL defensively with one of the worst linebacker units in 2020, it’s easy to see why they don’t pay a premium for players at that spot.

O-line early in the draft?

It’s hard to say. I think they should take a center or guard with one of their first three picks, but they haven’t shown much pre-draft interest in linemen this year. Quinn Meinerz is a player they could target at No. 57, as well as the other top centers if they fall (Creed Humphrey, Landon Dickerson).

But as of now, it seems like they could be eyeing a cornerback with their top pick in the draft. After that, wide receiver is another position they’ve looked closely at.

Given the importance of the center position, I think they’ll use a Day 2 pick on one.

How do the Rams have so many roster holes?

Many of the holes you mentioned may not actually be holes when the season begins, and not because the Rams will fill them in the draft. David Long Jr., Terrell Burgess or Donte Deayon could take over the slot role, Terrell Lewis or Justin Hollins could be a starting OLB, the Rams stashed a bunch of defensive linemen on the practice squad last year and they have options on the interior offensive line thanks to the versatility of guys like Austin Corbett.

Given their cap situation and lack of draft capital, they need their lesser-known player like Long, Lewis, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Eric Banks, Brian Allen, Coleman Shelton and Travin Howard to step up. They definitely need help at a handful of positions, but that doesn’t mean they’re pressing needs that must be filled immediately. Training camp could answer some of those questions.

Plan at center with Blythe gone?

If the Rams take a center early, the plan could absolutely be to move Corbett to center. That wouldn’t be my preferred choice because Corbett found a home at guard last year, but it’s an option.

I’d rather see L.A. take someone like Meinerz or Humphrey if available and let Corbett stay at center. Shelton could also be an option to start if he plays well in camp. Allen struggled in 2019 and shouldn’t be relied upon as a starter.

Where is the new uniform?

The Rams unveiled their new uniforms on May 13 last year, though they wanted to release them earlier in a fan-filled event at SoFi Stadium. They haven’t given a timeline on when the new alternate uniform will be released this year, but hopefully it’ll be in the next month or so.

With restrictions easing up, perhaps they’ll involve fans at SoFi Stadium this time. There is a season-ticket holder event at the stadium on April 17…

Whitworth successor?

At center and guard, I expect the Rams to draft at least one player who can play either spot. If it’s a guard, Corbett could move to center. If it’s a center, he’ll step in as the starter. Meinerz, Kendrick Green and Wyatt Davis are players to watch.

As for Andrew Whitworth’s successor, he could already be on the roster. Joe Noteboom showed some potential last year, Bobby Evans could get a chance to compete for that role and Tremayne Anchrum is a player the Rams like. Drafting someone this year is a possibility, but don’t count on it.
