Fantasy Baseball Waiver-Wire Targets: April 30, 2021

There is obviously a long way to go, but the current league batting average of .232 would be the lowest in Major League Baseball history. I point this out because many fantasy owners may be frustrated with the slow starts of their hitters. The weather hasn’t been great and there have been numerous off days in April. I’d expect that in the next few weeks that we will start seeing better production from the offense.
Waiver-Wire Targets
San Francisco Giants Starting Pitcher Alex Wood — The left-hander has been a top waiver-wire priority, so there’s a chance he’s already been scooped up. He’s passed the 50 percent ownership threshold that I use, but that has happened in the last day or two. Depending on when your league runs waivers, he could still be there. The veteran has impressed, as he has only allowed three earned runs while striking out 16 in his last two starts. Unfortunately, Wood’s next start will be in Colorado so if you’re able to add the crafty lefty, I’d recommend sitting him in his next outing and then firing him back up after that.
Milwaukee Brewers Second Baseman Kolten Wong — The infielder has been red hot since returning from injury. Wong has collected 12 hits since April 23 and has raised his batting average to .318. Wong is also batting leadoff for the Brewers, an added bonus for fantasy owners. Wong has been a solid player throughout his career, so I don’t think this is just a good stretch where he eventually regresses. There’s no way he can keep this pace, but by batting leadoff, he should be able to help fantasy owners.
Tampa Bay Rays Starting Pitcher Shane McClanahan — The left-hander showed one of the most electric pitching assortments we have seen this season during his debut April 29. The 24-year-old topped 100 mph a couple of times and was throwing a slider over 90 mph. In four innings, McClanahan struck out five. The hesitation is we don’t know if he will pitch deep into games, but the Rays have said they will use him as a traditional starting pitcher. I am betting on the talent and believe he can help in the strikeout department for fantasy owners.
New York Yankees Starting Pitcher Domingo German — The right-hander has pitched well in his last two starts, allowing just two earned runs while striking out 12. German is scheduled to face the Houston Astros in his next start. That will be a big test, but I do think the strikeouts will continue to be there for the right-hander.
Miami Marlins First Baseman Jesus Aguilar — Here’s another red-hot hitter who has been a popular add this week, so depending on the waiver-wire schedule in your league, he could already be gone. The power hitter has hit five home runs during his last six games and has collected seven hits during that span. Aguilar has shown elite power throughout his career and if he’s on a hot streak like this, fantasy owners need to capitalize.
