Seton Hall was out for revenge in Saturday afternoon’s game after losing to No. 3 Villanova by two points a week ago and blowing a 16-point second half lead to No. 17 Creighton on Wednesday.
However, Villanova denied Seton Hall a marquee win and that chance at revenge. The Pirates and the ‘Cats tend to play close games but 'Nova grabbed an early lead in this one and were never truly threatened by Seton Hall. The Wildcats ultimately won, 80-72.
Villanova started out strong in the first half leading by as much as 16 points. Some key takeaways in forging the big lead was a 16-3 run led by Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. Villanova scored a huge 13 points off of turnovers alone in the first stanza. At the end of the half, however, Seton Hall got back in the game by shutting out Villanova for the last 2:42 and going on a 6-0 run to get the game within 10 going into halftime.
The second half started out shaky with Robinson-Earl getting into quick foul trouble early, forcing Jay Wright to take him out four minutes into the half. 'Nova looked a little rattled early but everytime the Pirates made a couple baskets, the 'Cats responded.
Four different Wildcats scored in double figures. Robinson-Earl led the way with 23 points, despite being out of the game almost the entire second half. Jermaine Samuels was close behind grabbing 17 points, 15 of which in the second half. Justin Moore had a big game as well with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Lastly, Collin Gillespie added 11 points and had a career-high 11 assists.
For Seton Hall, Shavar Reynolds paced the Pirates with 13 points. Myles Cale and Jared Rhoden also had a solid showing providing 12 points a piece. While Sandro Mamukelashvili had nine rebounds, he was limited to 12 points, eight under his average against Villanova.
