SAN ANGELO, Texas (January 14, 2021) – Four Lubbock Christian University men's basketball players finished in double-figures and two more fell just one point short as the Chaparrals took down Angelo State 87-69 Thursday in the Junell Center.

The Chaps moved to 5-0 overall and in Lone Star Conference play with the win, giving them their best start since the 2010-11 season, when they also won five straight to start the season.

LCU never trailed in Thursday night's win, building an early 6-0 lead on buckets from Lloyd Daniels, Rowan Mackenzie and Parker Hicks while ASU struggled shooting. The first Ram point came almost three minutes in on a free throw from Paul Williams, and they did not make a field goal until the 15:59 mark.

Just two minutes later, a jumper from Aamer Muhammad sparked a quick 7-0 run by the Chaps and put them ahead by double-figures for the first time with 13:01 to play in the opening half. Angelo State would never cut the deficit to single-digits the rest of the way.

Hicks nailed a three-pointer with 6:28 left to go in the first half to put Lubbock Christian up 35-15, giving them their first 20-point lead. It was the only make behind the arc for Hicks all night, but the senior still scored 16 on 7-11 shooting. He has scored more than 10 points in every game so far this season.

Angelo State quickly hit back with a three-pointer of their own but could not string together enough defensive stops to shrink the gap to anything less than 13 points before halftime. Lubbock Christian's offense dominated the opening 20 minutes, hitting 64.5 percent (20-31) of their shots.

Kevon Godwin hit a jumper to start the second half, cutting the Chap lead to 12, where it hovered until the 16:22 mark. At that point, Mackenzie got to the free throw line and hit both foul shots, sparking a 14-2 LCU run. Seven of the points in the run were scored by Mackenzie, who finished with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds, while also leading LCU with five assists. The Australia native did a large majority of his work from the charity stripe, where he went 9-for-11.

By the time the last two points of the runs were scored (on a layup by Gonzalo Corbalan), Lubbock Christian found themselves up by 24 points. A three-point play from Muhammad, who had a season-high 14 points, and a layup from Hicks increased the lead to 27 points with 11:30 to go, which was the largest it would get all night.

ASU did not give up and was able to pare the lead back down to 16 with just under four minutes left, but LCU was never in any real danger of allowing a comeback. Several more made free throws and a dunk from freshman Jalen Brattain in the closing minutes put LCU up by 21 before ASU's Sam Baker hit a buzzer-beater three-pointer from beyond half court for the final margin of 18 points.

TURNING POINT
Lubbock Christian led wire-to-wire against Angelo State, but really put the game away with a dominant 12-0 run in the second half. Leading by only 12 four minutes into the second period, Mackenzie sparked the run with a layup and then followed up by hitting all three free throws when he was fouled shooting behind the arc. By the next media timeout, LCU was up by 24.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Chaps shot 57.9 percent from the field in the win, which is their best shooting percentage so far this season. The last time they shot at a higher percentage was Jan. 23, 2020, when they hit 58.9 percent of their shots in an 87-82 win against St. Mary's.

NEXT UP
LCU has one day to regroup and tweak before facing Angelo State again. The rematch will take place at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the Rip Griffin Center.
