WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Outside the Wire, now streaming on Netflix.
Netflix's Outside the Wire focuses on Lt. Thomas Harp (Damson Idris), a drone pilot who's sent to Eastern Europe after ignoring orders and launching a Hellfire airstrike that killed two young marines. He saved 38 people, but his superiors are worried about how logical he is, making cold-hearted decisions as if he's a machine. He ends up under a biotech android, Captain Leo (Anthony Mackie), and they embark on a journey through Ukraine to collect nuclear codes.
As they try to stop the Russian warlord known as Koval (Pilou Asbæk), however, Harp realizes Leo's been playing him all this time and the robot actually has a secret agenda of his own. This leads to an explosive finale where Harp has a crisis on conscience regarding the future of world wars.
Leo Goes Rogue
Throughout the film, a gullible Harp keeps sanctioning questionable decisions by Leo, but it's all part of Leo's scheme to hack his protocol. He gets Harp to remove a tracker from his body, but it's really a failsafe device, which now allows him to do whatever he wants without government reprisal. He knocks Harp out and leaves him in the streets before going to visit Koval, his silent partner.
However, Leo slaughters the terrorists as he knows once they live, they'll keep wreaking havoc by trying to reclaim Soviet territories. Leo's against this because he's seen so much death and destruction, and having shown Harp what his drones have done to families, it's clear Leo wants to find a way to teach America a lesson.
Harp Becomes the Hunter
Harp ends up with the Resistance led by Sofiya, but she doesn't care that Leo's going to nuke the U.S. To her, it's all collateral damage and payback because America keeps claiming it's defending people and keeping peace in the region. The resistance hates that the machine keeps on turning, so she's glad Leo is going to try to end the vicious cycle.
But upon returning to his camp, Harp realizes he can get his old drone buddy, Bale, to track Leo's car. He tells his superiors he wants to make up for his sins and go after him. They need visual confirmation, after all, that Leo's launching the nukes as they must go by the book, so Harp has to be there in person to make the call for Bale to bomb the site on the Ukrainian border.
Burning The House Down
Harp sneaks into the base but is incapacitated by Leo, who then starts the countdown. Unfortunately, by the time he wakes back up and uses incendiary rounds to fry Leo, the launch can't be stopped. Harp has to blow the place, but Leo wants him to let their home be destroyed. It'll cost millions of lives, but he's saving billions as it'll discourage them from building similar machines for future wars. Leo reveals the more machines and fewer humans the government uses, the more war will perpetuate.
Harp makes it clear, though, humanity will learn from its mistakes and he calls Bale to attack. The facility explodes before the nukes can launch, but just when it seems like Harp didn't make it out, he calls his team from the road and lets them know the mission was a success. The film ends with him heading home to be with his beloved Olivia -- a changed man as he now realizes the truth about the casualties of war and how both sides are to blame.
Outside the Wire, directed by Mikael Håfström and starring Anthony Mackie, Damson Idris, Emily Beecham,Enzo Cilenti, Michael Kelly and Kristina Tonteri-Young and Pilou Asbæk is now streaming on Netflix.
