HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana shot 57.4 percent from the field on the way to an impressive 73-53 Southland Conference victory over New Orleans in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon in the University Center.

Southeastern (5-6, 4-4 Southland) never trailed in the game, sponsored by North Oaks Health System. The Lady Lions bounced back from a tough 60-54 loss to Central Arkansas on Wednesday, dropping the visiting Privateers to 4-8 overall and 1-5 in Southland Conference action.

"We had some players who took the loss on Wednesday hard," Southeastern head coach Ayla Guzzardo said. "They've been putting in the extra work in the gym working on their shots and you saw the results today."

One of those players singled out by Guzzardo for her work ethic was Hailey Giaratano, who led SLU with 18 points and eight rebounds. The sophomore from Ponchatoula, Louisiana set new career highs for points, rebounds and three-point field goals made, sinking four of her six attempts from behind the arc.

Giaratano was joined in double figures by Morgan Carrier and Cierria Cunningham with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Natalie Kelly and Breonca Ducksworth added eight points apiece, as Guzzardo praised the production throughout the team.

"We're much better when we play as a team," Guzzardo commented. "We have had our most success this season when we have balanced scoring."

Ducksworth also led Southeastern with four assists. The Lady Lions held UNO to 34.4 percent (21-for-61) shooting, as Daija Harvey recorded a game-high four steals for the Lady Lions.

New Orleans was led by Jada Duncantell and Dionjhae Thomas with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Duncantell and Zoe Cooper shared team-high honors with six rebounds each, while Duncantell also dished out four assists.

SLU shot 90.9 percent (10-for-11) from the floor – including 4-for-4 from behind the arc – on the way to a 24-10 lead after the opening quarter. The Lady Lions broke the game open even further in the second quarter, growing their advantage to as many as 24 on the way to a 42-22 halftime lead.

New Orleans played Southeastern to a standstill in the second half, but could never mount much of a comeback. The Privateers could only close the deficit to 16 in the second half.
