Week 1 is coming to the end, and that means it is time to look toward the waiver wire to see who you should be adding to improve your roster. This year’s waiver wire pickups may be a little more crucial than most seasons. Without a preseason, we were made to speculate how these teams would use certain players. It is only one week, but we at least have something to go on.
These are your waiver wire pickups for Week 2:
James Robinson, Jaguars, running back: It is rare that you can just go and add a starting running back off the waiver. When the Jaguars traded away Leonard Fournette, it left an obvious hole to be filled, and Robinson is clearly the guy there now. He had a total of 17 touches for 90 yards (one of which was a catch). Also he was the only running back to receive a carry, and Chris Thompson only had two receptions on the game.
Robby Anderson, Panthers, wide receiver: Only owned in about 30 percent of Yahoo leagues, Anderson is a solid add for any team in need of a receiver. The Teddy Bridgewater and Anderson connection was on full display Week 1. He had eight targets, caught six passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Most of that came on a 75-yard play, but the volume combined with that big play ability is really what makes Anderson an attractive add this week.
Scotty Miller, Bucs, wide receiver: Tom Brady sure knows how to elevate obscure wide receivers. Only Chris Godwin had more targets than Miller in Week 1. Is that something that can continue? Who knows? But at this point if you are in a deep PPR league he should be available. He is only owned in about five percent of leagues and is well worth a speculative add.
Joshua Kelly, Chargers, running back: Kelly may have solidified himself as the second man behind Austin Ekeler. There is also the possibility that he could be an evn better fit than Ekeler is for this new Tyrod Taylor led offense. He had 12 carries for 60 yards and the only touchdown of the game for Los Angeles. Ekeler out carried and out gained the rookie, but it is clear that Kelley was favored in the redzone.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Packers, wide receiver: So Valdes-Scantling had a big Week 1 with four catches for 96 yards with 45 of them coming on a touchdown catch. The thing is he left at least 60 yards and another score on the field with a pretty rough drop. It is clear that Valdes-Scantling has some value in a high powered offense with Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball. It is a matter of whether he cane become more consistent.
Dallas Goedert, Eagles, tight end: Carson Wentz loves his tight ends. Goedert ended Week 1 with eight catches for 101 yards and a touchdown. He even had more targets than Zach Ertz on the day. It is hard to say how reliable this split will be between these two, but if you are feeling uneasy about your tight ends grab Goedert.
Nyheim Hines, Colts, running back: Marlon Mack is out for the season for the Colts. Hines and Jonathan Taylor will be splitting duties at running back, and after Mack went down Hines had 20 snaps to Taylor’s 21. It is worth noting that Hines was the one who finished the day with two scores. The reason Hines is on this list instead of Taylor is because Taylor is owned in 98 percent of leagues while Hines is only owned in about 15 percent.
Gardner Minshew II, Jaguars, quarterback: I’m usually not a fan of dumping a quarterback this early in the season, but Minshew looked lights out in Week 1 against the Colts. He completed 19 of 20 passes with three touchdowns. The only complaint is he only had 173 passing yards. Touchdowns are king in fantasy though, and it is clear this team trusts Minshew to get them in the end zone.
