The Green Bay Packers will be 2-0 to start the 2020 season if Matt LaFleur’s team can beat the Detroit Lions in the home opener at Lambeau Field on Sunday.
Jeff Risdon, the managing editor of Lions Wire, answered five questions from Packers Wire to help preview Sunday’s Week 2 NFC North battle:
Packers Wire: Alright. What happened in Week 1? Classic Lions meltdown, or just super unlucky? It's hard to believe the Lions aren't 1-0.
Risdon: Oh boy, where to begin? It’s a motley stew of negative factors all stirred together. Two of the three starting CBs went out with injury and were replaced by predominately special-teamers who are new to the Lions. Yet coach Matt Patricia insisted on running the same defensive scheme, asking them to excel in man coverage with no help from safeties or the pass rush. It let Mitchell Trubisky get some confidence and flow going and he never looked back. There were some other issues. Matthew Stafford threw a terrible interception and also took a bad sack in the fourth quarter. Matt Prater missed a field goal. Rookie WR Quintez Cephus, playing extensively in place of injured Kenny Golladay, had a drop after running a bad route. Have to give the Bears some credit too, they got their act together after the Lions dominated the third quarter.
Packers Wire: Matthew Stafford is back. He's been a Packer killer in recent years. How did he look in Week 1?
Risdon: Stafford was certainly good enough to win the game, but he did make a couple of bad mistakes. His INT in the fourth quarter was a poor decision, throwing on the move over the middle into zone coverage. But overall he was sharp, especially considering he played without Golladay and with a backup right tackle going against Khalil Mack all day.
Packers Wire: Who is going to play CB for the Lions on Sunday?
Risdon: We should see No. 3 overall pick Jeff Okudah after he missed the opener with a bad hamstring. Desmond Trufant will likely be listed as questionable but I would expect him to give it a go unless his hamstring has a setback. He played well in coverage (but not tackling) in Week 1. Amani Oruwariye will play a lot. He’s the team’s biggest CB and has performed better than expectations. Justin Coleman is now on IR, so he’s definitely out. Darryl Roberts also has a hamstring and he’ll likely be questionable too. Everyone saw him give up the game-winning TD but prior to that he played better than anyone would expect of a No. 6 CB.
Packers Wire: Who needs to play really well for the Lions to win? One offense, one defense.
Risdon: Offensively it’s got to be center Frank Ragnow. It’s a tough position to measure, but he’s going up against Kenny Clark and Clark can wreck offenses inside. Ragnow was exceptional in Week 1 and he helped key Adrian Peterson to run for almost 100 yards. Stafford doesn’t handle up-the-gut pressure as well as he does from the outsides, so Ragnow is vital. Honorable mention to T.J. Hockenson, who played very well as a receiver in Week 1.
On defense, the Lions need Trey Flowers to do more than just generate pressures. He’s the team’s most talented player on defense. Detroit relies on having Flowers win his individual battle to create pressure. Again, he’s successful at doing that, but he doesn’t typically finish sacks. The Lions don’t really have any other pass rushers to clean up what Flowers starts, unfortunately.
Prediction. Do the Lions win at Lambeau?
Risdon: Not this year. Not with all the lingering injuries and not with Matt Patricia’s refusal to adapt his scheme to accommodate those injuries or game situations. Packers by 12.
