Fans and players were shocked to see a trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 during 2019's E3 conference. However, there has been barely any news regarding this mysterious title since the initial cinematic trailer.
Considering this lack of news, it only makes sense that attention will be brought back to Breath of the Wild 2 soon, potentially for the next Nintendo Direct. After all, the next one was seemingly scheduled to take place during E3 week for a big June Nintendo Direct, but reports indicate that it may be delayed. So, because of how heavily Nintendo is being impacted, it may be a wait. As such, if the next direct is a wait anyway, the Big N would be wise to show something fans have been waiting for regardless.
What to Expect From Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2
With the last Nintendo Direct being a mini-direct back in March of this year, the next direct is sure to be huge on top of eveything else. There's nothing pressing more on fans' minds right now than what exactly is to be expected from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. While its entirely possible that just another cinematic trailer could be shown, if this game were to be the headliner for the next direct, fans are sure to see some gameplay.
It is confirmed that this sequel will be built off of the original Hyrule map from the original Breath of the Wild, but there will be new gameplay to change it up. This new gameplay could show whether or not Zelda will be playable as many fans desire, new abilities, and possibly a preview of upcoming dungeons.
Another aspect that might be shown off is what the plot concept for this sequel could be. Many fans would want to see if this game is only tied to the original Breath of the Wild or if it possibly has ties to other games in the vast Zelda timeline, the history of Ganondorf, or the existence of Calamity Ganon as well. It could also be possible that both another cinematic trailer and gameplay could be shown. After so much time has passed since the last trailer, a lot of work has definitely gone into the title with plenty of things that could be shown off to generate hype. While players probably won't be shown too much to spoiler much of what's to come, player will most likely be given something to relight the excitement for this project.
The worst possible case scenario for this project is a prolonged wait, as the initial game generated a ton of revenue for the company and the E3 reveal had the internet buzzing for weeks. If it doesn't headline the next Direct, whether that's June or August, October or November, then one can assume its prolonged wait is even longer. In that case, a few other things could happen.
What to Expect From the Next Nintendo Direct
Other than Breath of the Wild 2, there are other projects that fans are looking forward to that haven't gotten much word from Nintendo. One project that could be mentioned is the heavily rumored Pikmin 3 port for the Nintendo Switch. With some rumors even saying that the game is complete and just waiting to get a release date, it's very possible that it will drop on the E-Shop as soon as it's mentioned in the direct with an "available right now" announcement.
Another possible announcement could be a delay for Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield's Isle of Armor DLC expansion due to the troubles of remote development during the current global pandemic. This wouldn't be the first time a very hyped up Nintendo title was suddenly delayed as Animal Crossing: New Horizons was delayed for different reasons before its March 2020 release, and that was before the COVID-19 pandemic
What many fans expect in every Nintendo Direct is the inclusion of some kind of Super Smash Brothers Ultimate announcement, as the comments are often littered with comments asking for a new character. With an ARMS character slated to become the next DLC character, the reveal of this new fighter and stage are likely to come during the next direct. However, many players are unsure which character from ARMS will be becoming a fighter, as the series' headliner character, Spring Man is already an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Brother Ultimate.
If Spring Man were to become the next Smash DLC fighter, this could completely change predictions for who may end up as Smash DLC fighters for fans, as it then becomes fair game for any character that was previously not considered due to their Assist Trophy role.
Another title that could receive new news is the recently announced Paper Mario: The Origami King. While some players are rightfully excited for this new Paper Mario title, many are still wary of this upcoming title due to the wounds of Paper Mario: Sticker Star still being fresh for those who've played it. More news on this title could possibly quell fans' worries or possibly bring out brand new ones.
When Will Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 Come Out?
Considering the lack of news, it is impossible to gauge when Breath of the Wild 2 will be released. One thing that's most likely is that it won't be coming out in 2020 at all. Based on the current development time that's known, one of the best case scenarios is late 2021 to early 2022.
While this sequel will be building itself upon assets that were available in the original Breath of the Wild, crafting gameplay and other factors can take a lot of time, especially when working remotely during a pandemic. Even if not much is shown during the Nintendo Direct, just some update on Breath of the Wild 2 would be sufficient.
With the next Nintendo Direct, it is possible—alebit most likely a pipe dream—that the release date for Breath of the Wild 2 could be announced, as well as a proper title. The in-development game is currently only known as a sequel to Breath of the Wild at this time with no proper title, so it's very possible that the game could have a title tagline that's completely unique from Breath of the Wild, like how Majora's Mask is titled compared to Ocarina of Time.
Until the announcement for the next Nintendo Direct and its showing, fans can only speculate on what's to come from Nintendo in the future.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is in development.
