It was just 80 years ago today, August 8, 1941 when the Japanese Ambassador to the United States, Admiral Nomura, suggested that there should be direct negotiations between the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of the Empire of Japan. The goal was to reach some sort of agreement on the differences between the two nations in a desperate attempt to avoid war. It all came down to one fact, the US would not tolerate continued Japanese aggression while the Japanese insisted the US had no business in their foreign affairs.
