A new week has dawned across Major League Baseball and it’s time to decide who to add to your fantasy team to fill some holes for the next week.
We’ll tell you who we think is a solid pickup on the waiver wire that you can look for some solid production out of this week.
William Contreras, C, Atlanta Braves
ESPN ownership: 10.1%
The Atlanta backstop is going to see a lot more action after an injury to their normal starting catcher, Travis d’Arnaud. He’s expected to be out of the lineup for at least three months, so Contreras will get some time to prove himself as a consistent starter in the Majors. In his first six games since taking over, Contreras has five hits, including a home run. He is a heavy strikeout guy though, with two in each of his last three games heading into the week.
Brandon Belt, 1B, San Francisco Giants
ESPN ownership: 18%
Belt is a veteran presence who has had consistency throughout his career. His average is low this season, at just .226, but his career number is above .260. That’s mainly due to a high strikeout total (36 this season). But he has a ton of upside. Over his last six games, he’s been striking out less, averaging one K per game over his last six matchups, while also hitting three home runs in that same span. You can take a few strikeouts this week if it means you’ll see it pay off with some long balls later on.
Shane McClanahan, P, Tampa Bay Rays
ESPN ownership: 23%
The rookie has made three starts so far in his career, and has been impressive in each. Rays manager Kevin Cash doesn’t seem to want to stretch him too much, going just four innings in each of his appearances. Still, he does damage in limited time.
He has five strikeouts in each start this season and has yet to give up more than three runs in a game. In his last two starts, he’s allowed just six hits with three total runs scored by the opponents.
