Peacock is developing a series adaptation of the Victoria Aveyard novel “Red Queen” with Elizabeth Banks attached to executive produce, direct and appear in a major supporting role.

Beth Schwartz and Aveyard co-wrote the pilot and will executive produce the project, with Schwartz also serving as showrunner. Banks and Max Handelman executive produce via Brownstone Productions. Dannah Shinder is co-executive producer. Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television will co-produce. Both Brownstone and Schwartz are currently under overall deals at WBTV.

The one-hour drama is set in an alternate near-future America where democracy is replaced by a monarchy led by a group of humans with superpowers who rule with an iron fist over those without powers. Mare, a fiery young woman born to poverty without powers, is doing the best she can to survive and protect her family when she discovers the unthinkable: She somehow has powers too. This shocking discovery turns our world upside down and catapults our unlikely hero to become the face of a revolution for the oppressed while searching for the truth behind the greatest mystery of all…how she became so powerful in the first place.

Banks had previously been working on a film adaptation of “Red Queen” going back to 2015. Other recently announced projects for Brownstone include the “Flintstones” sequel series “Bedrock” at Fox, with Banks set to voice an adult Pebbles. The company has a wide array of other projects set up at various networks and streamers around town. On the film side, their current slate includes “Invisible Woman,” “Science Fair,” and “The Magic School Bus,” while their TV slate includes “Shrill” at Hulu and “Over My Dead Body” at HBO Max.

Banks and Brownstone are repped by UTA, Untitled Entertainment, Relevant, and Ziffren Brittenham.

Schwartz most recently co-created the upcoming Netflix series “Sweet Tooth,” on which she is also an executive producer and co-showrunner. She is known for her work on The CW series “Arrow,” having joined the show in Season 1 and rising to executive producer and showrunner in its last two seasons.

She is repped by UTA and Felker Toczek.

For Aveyard, “Red Queen” was her first novel, which she followed up with the sequels “Glass Sword,” “King’s Cage,” and “War Storm.” Her books include four number one New York Times bestselling and USA Today bestselling novels, two New York Times bestselling novellas, and a New York Times bestselling short story collection. “Realm Breaker,” the first installment in her next young adult fantasy series, was released May 4.
