Envisioned by David Simon, The Wire is considered to be one the best series of all time, thanks to beautifully detailed characters and realness of the storylines. A crime drama at heart, the HBO original changed the way people looked at cops, as some of their daily problems are honestly explored by the show.

Based in Baltimore, a city filled with drugs and corruption, police officers from different headquarters come together to try and make the city safe. The show has a lot of different cops, ranging from smart ones to the brain dead. Without further ado, let's rank the top ten officers in the Baltimore Police Department from The Wire.

10 Leander Sydnor

Sydnor is a police officer who follows orders without a string of doubt in his mind. He is loyal, smart, patient, and rarely complains; these are some of the traits that make him popular in the Major Crimes Unit.

Syndor is versatile as well – that is – he's good enough to be on the streets and in looking at the wire, carving out a pattern that all criminals have. He plays a huge role in bringing down Marlo Stanfield.

9 Roland Pryzbylewski

While Detective Pryzbylewski is no good on the field, inside the cabin, when he has all the data laid out in front of him, only Lester can draw out conclusions better than him. And Lester is the most intelligent officer in the entire series, which makes Pryzbylewski a really good police officer.

Even though he made a few mistakes along the way, he helped Daniels and the Major Crimes Unit solve two huge cases. Moreover, he paid for his biggest mistake – his failure to identify himself as a police officer.

8 Jay Landsman

Sergeant of the Baltimore Homicide Department, Jay Landsman is a sucker for clearances. He just needs them to satisfy the bosses because he doesn't want to lose his spot, by not following the chain of command.

Landsman is smarter than he looks and knows exactly what case is suitable for a particular detective. A food lover at heart, Jay is also the source of comic relief in the series, thanks to his ability to pull off pranks at any given time.

7 William Rawls

While William Rawls doesn't do any police work on the ground, he sure knows how to play the political game. He is one of those cops who would rather leave a case unsolved than taking it upon his department.

Rawls loves to hold grudges against police officers who don't follow the chain of command and when the time is right, he demotes them to a place they don't want to go.

6 Ellis Carver

Made for Western Baltimore, Ellis Carver's journey in the series is an interesting one. He starts out in the Major Crimes Unit, where he does most of the work on the street. After the Barksdale case, he gets promoted to Sergeant before becoming the Lieutenant towards the end of the show.

Carver isn't patient enough to thoroughly build a case, so he relies upon unforeseen busts and intimidating the drug handlers, although they don't easily get frightened.

5 Kima Greggs

Coming from the Narcotics Department, Kima Greggs is one of the smartest cops in the Major Crimes Unit, who can do the job in the streets, as well as work strategy. But due to her obsession with work, her personal life is left behind.

And every day, Greggs tries to get better, starting with drinking less on the job. She is a quick learner and loyal, baring, maybe, a couple of times.

4 Bunk Moreland

One of the very few cops who work in the same department (Baltimore Homicide) for the entire series, Bunk Moreland is a murder police, at heart, who dispenses one of the show's big learnings – don't care when it's not your turn to care.

Known as The Bunk among his peers, Moreland is intelligent, loyal, and most importantly, he knows there is a life beyond the job. Also, after a couple of drinks, Bunk is the funniest man anyone will ever come across.

3 Cedric Daniels

The very first Lieutenant of the Major Crimes Unit, Cedric Daniels is tough, fair, and knows how to run his troops. At first, he wants to make it up the ladder, but when it starts interfering with the police work, he decides to go behind the bosses, in order to put an end to the crime on the streets.

But, soon, Daniels starts making the jump when Tommy Carcetti becomes the Mayor of Baltimore. It's Daniels' truthfulness to the job that makes such a brilliant cop, coupled with his ability to learn from his mistakes.

2 Jimmy McNulty

A nightmare for the bosses but an irresistible police officer, that is Jimmy McNulty in a nutshell (add to it his horrible drinking habits). Jimmy cared more about the job than his own family and in the end, that kind of obsession compelled him to make the biggest mistake of his professional career.

Despite that, Jimmy is a good person at heart, who sometimes cares too much or not enough. The worst thing about him is that he keeps making the same mistakes.

1 Lester Freamon

The smartest cop in the room, Lester Freamon joined the Major Crimes after spending much of his time in the Pawn Shop Unit. While he seemed quiet at first, when the wire came up, he became a different beast.

Patience is Freamon's greatest virtue, coupled with his ability to draw out a pattern in every criminal activity. Lester is also someone who doesn't like to play by the rule of the bosses, but he knows solving a case isn't as important as having a life outside of the job.
