BLOOMINGTON (HOI) - Community activists are applauding Wednesday's announcement that the City of Bloomington is offering financial relief to residents harmed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city said the direct aid to residents is available for people who had a "documented crisis related to COVID-19" on or after March 17 of this year.

The government is making available $270,000 to Bloomington residents. Maximum assistance per person is $1,000 per month or a total of $3,000 to help pay for rent, mortgage, utilities, health care, and child care expenses, the city said.

Information including eligibility for the program can be found on the city's website.

On its Facebook page, the Bloomington-Normal Democratic Socialists of America said the city's announcement follows months of "dedicated organizing" alongside the Bloomington-Normal chapter of Black Lives Matter and Illinois People's Action.

"Because of the active support, tireless organizing, and consistent voices of our collective community, the City of Bloomington accepted our demand for publicly managed, direct aid program that is flexible in the relief that it provides to those struggling as a result of the COVID-19 crisis," the local advocates said.
