ITIN Holders Direct Assistance Program

Under the new ITIN Holders Direct Assistance Program, the Division of Taxation will be sending aid payments to New Jersey residents who used Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) when filing their 2021 New Jersey Income Tax returns.

An ITIN is a tax processing number issued by the federal Internal Revenue Service to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have a Social Security number.

Who is eligible for a payment

Anyone who:

  • Has an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number);
  • Has filed a 2021 New Jersey Resident Income Tax Return; and
  • Meets the income guidelines shown on the chart below.
Number of ITIN holders listed on 2021 New Jersey Resident Income Tax Return Maximum 2021 New Jersey Gross Income Limit
1 $25,760

3 $43,920
4 $53,000
5 $62,080

*If there are more than eight ITIN holders listed on your 2021 New Jersey Resident Income Tax Return, add $9,080 to the maximum income limit for each additional person.

Do I need to apply for the ITIN Holders Direct Assistance Program?

You do not need to apply for this program, but you must have filed a 2021 New Jersey Resident Income Tax return to qualify. You can still file a 2021 return if you have not done so already. An ITIN Holders Direct Assistance Program payment will be calculated automatically for eligible ITIN holders after you have filed.

If I did not file a New Jersey tax return in 2021, can I still qualify for the payment?

No. You must file a 2021 New Jersey Resident Income Tax return to qualify, even if your income is below the filing threshold. However, the good news is that you can still file if you have not already. For more information, visit our Income Tax Resource Center.

How much money will I receive if I am eligible?

$500 for every ITIN holder listed on the tax return. For example, if a married couple files a tax return jointly and claims two dependents, and all four of them have ITINs, they will receive a total of $2,000.

When will New Jersey send my payment?

We will begin mailing payments starting in November 2022.

What address will New Jersey use to send my payment?

We will send the payment to the address we have on file, which is typically the address you provide us on your Income Tax return.

What if my address or contact information has changed since I filed?

Visit our Address Change page to update your contact information with us.

I think I am eligible for a payment, but did not receive one. What should I do?

If you have not received a payment by December 15, 2022, you can call our Customer Service Center at 609-292-6400 to speak to a representative.

What can I do if I lost my check?

You can call our Customer Service Center at 609-292-6400 to speak to a representative.
