Beijing, May 30 (EFE).- Mexico and China have resumed their direct cargo air connectivity with a flight between the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou and Mexico City, diplomatic sources told EFE Monday.
The flight, operated by Mexican airline Mas Air, departed on Saturday.
It is the first flight directly linking China and Mexico for commercial purposes.
Commercial passenger routes between China and Mexico were suspended in December 2019.
The Mexican ambassador to China, Jesús Seade, welcomed the resumption of the direct air connection at an inaugural ceremony.
Seade said the route was essential to promote commercial exchanges, integration of value chains, and expand cross-border agricultural and electronic trade.
Air cargo played a more critical role than ever given the current shortage of containers and rising shipping costs, which have led to “unsustainable” waiting periods, said the ambassador.
In a statement, the Mexican embassy described Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, as “one of the largest logistics centers of the national transportation network in China.”
“Undoubtedly, this cargo route is essential and responds to the strong need to connect China with Latin America and the Caribbean through Mexico City,” the diplomat added.
He stressed the importance of air cargo transport, citing the example of the air bridge under which 27 flights operated between Shanghai and the Mexican capital in 2020 to transport medical supplies for the Covid-19 pandemic.
Air cargo routes between China and Mexico City operated more than 350 flights in 2020 and 2021, covering all Latin America and Caribbean countries, said the statement.
The Mexican embassy “will also continue working to resume passenger flights between Mexico and China in the near future,” it added. EFE
