Given the ways these characters differ, it would be interesting to examine them based on their Chinese Zodiac. These Zodiacs take a look at how each animal represented in the calendar has its own unique traits. So which characters on The Wire best fit with which Chinese Zodiac? Let's take a look.

12 Rat - Bodie

In one of the most iconic scenes in the series, a young hustler named Bodie is taught about chess. He is told that the pawns are like the soldiers in the game. They are on the streets, taking orders and they are expendable.

Bodie is most certainly a soldier and that seems to suggest he is a Rat as well. While the name might sound unappealing, Rat's are clever, quick learners, and resourceful. Though he is not a leader, Bodie takes pride in being the best soldier in the streets and knows how to stay in the game.

11 Ox - Marlo Stanfield

An Ox is known for their hard work ethic and remaining persistent in all their endeavors. These are characteristics shared by Marlo Stanfield, an ambitious criminal who looks to seize power wherever he can.

Marlo is also someone who knows to keep a low profile. He doesn't allow himself to relax too often and is always on his toes. Also, like the Ox, his stubbornness can be a problem as Marlo puts his reputation on the streets above all else.

10 Tiger - Avon Barksdale

Before Marlo came along, Avon Barksdale was the man that owned the streets of Baltimore as the city's biggest drug kingpin. It is Avon's Tiger personality that led to much of his success and perhaps his downfall as well.

A Tiger is a strong leader who is bold, confident, and charming. They are never one to back away from a challenge and can also be hot-headed at times. When Avon is challenged, he fights back and embraces the gangster lifestyle rather than being a businessman.

9 Rabbit - Beadie

While most of the characters in the show are ruthless people who are part of this dangerous world, there are some who just try to be good people. Beadie is one of those rare characters and one that is best represented as a Rabbit.

Like a Rabbit, Beadie is a kind and gentle person. As a police officer, she is cautious and grounded, unlike some of her more reckless colleagues. As a partner to McNulty, she is also patient with his destructive behavior.

8 Dragon - Omar Little

Though the show is filled with great characters, Omar Little is certainly the most iconic character from The Wire. He is a hustler who specializes in robbing drug dealers. However, he also lives by a code to not hurt anyone who isn't in the game.

It should be no surprise that Omar is a Dragon. One of the most powerful personalities, a Dragon is dominant and ambitious. They are risk-takers and embrace challenges. But, as with Omar's chosen line of work, they can also be reckless.

7 Snake - Lester Freamon

Despite what the name might suggest, a Snake has many positive qualities that can be reflected in the character of Lester Freamon. Though he is totally dedicated to his job, Lester has an easy quality and seems totally at peace.

He is one of the smartest detectives around and is so good at his job because of his natural intuition. He likes there to be an order to things which is also the way he runs his investigations.

6 Horse - Kima Greggs

Greggs is another key detective in the show and someone who excels at her job simply because she puts in so much hard work, much like most Horses. The stress of the job can sometimes get to her, but she doesn't back down.

As a person, Greggs is someone who is very easy to get along with. She is popular and well-liked by her colleagues and is very pleasant to those around her, despite being in a job that doesn't always make people so nice.

5 Goat - Frank Sobotka

The second season of the series focuses on the dockyards of Baltimore and one of the key characters in that storyline was the high-ranking members of the dockworker's union. He becomes involved in the city's drug trade when helping out with a smuggling operation.

Like other Goats, Frank is someone who thrives in a group. He enjoys the company of his fellow dockworkers and they look to him as their leader. His illegal business it to help them and he remains he puts their well-being above his own.

4 Monkey - Herc

A Monkey is the type of person who might be a joker and good for a laugh but is hard to tack seriously. Herc fits this personality quite well as he is known more for his jokes and comedic personality than for being an effective detective.

His immature personality can often harm others, even if his intentions are not bad. Monkeys thrive in an urban environment and Herc certainly sees himself holding some kind of authority in Baltimore's streets despite that not really being true.

3 Rooster - Jimmy McNulty

Despite The Wire very much being an ensemble piece, Jimmy McNulty is probably the main character. He is a dedicated and talented detective who probably sees himself as a hero despite having some very serious flaws.

McNulty is certainly a Rooster as he is confident in his skills and observant which helps in his work. He is often the center of attention and enjoys it but can sometimes not recognize when other people are just annoyed by him. He is also not afraid to speak his mind which often causes trouble.

2 Dog - Bubbles

Bubbles is one of the most likable characters on the show which makes him an obvious choice for a Dog. Bubbles is someone who is overlooked by most of society but that does not stop him from helping out people however he can.

He is extremely loyal to his friends and will do anything for them, but his trust in them is betrayed, it can be very hard to win back. Dogs are easy to like and, despite the bad people in this show, Bubbles is impossible not to like.

1 Pig - Stringer Bell

The Wire Stringer Bell Middle Ground

Stringer Bell is the right-hand man to Avon Barksdale and the man who runs the business side of their illegal operation. Stringer's ambition is his main characteristic which is why he makes a perfect Pig.
