Recognizing the need for more school counselors, Bay Path University has created a more direct path for their students to obtain School Adjustment Counselor licenses.
No longer will students at the Longmeadow university need to go elsewhere to complete their requirements.
Graduate students in the Bay Path Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program can now specialize their studies to earn the SAC license in Massachusetts. Previously, Bay Path students working towards Licensed Mental Health Counselor eligibility were required to take additional classes outside of their degree requirements, at other institutions.
“It became clear to us that we could make the path to this licensure easier and more direct for our students by offering this fully within the (Bay Path) program,” said Mark Bernander, Director of Psychology Programs and Assistant Professor of Psychology.
“Serving our youth in the public schools is a common aspiration for students in the mental health field, Our new program is perfectly suited to help those students meet their career goals.”
During the 2018-19 school year, a total of 2,430 counselors served nearly a million Massachusetts students. The student-counselor ratio of 396 to 1 was far above the 250-to-1 ratio recommended by the American School Counselor Program.
Last fall, Bay Path presented its program to the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for approval. The first students in the new program will be accepted this fall.
Upon graduation, these students will have met educational licensing eligibility requirements.
