STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-- Martin Scorsese is getting back in the director’s chair sooner than you think.
The “Goodfellas” and “Taxi Driver” director announced Tuesday that he will co-direct co-direct and executive produce a feature documentary profiling David Johansen, a leading member of the rock band New York Dolls for Showtime.
“I’ve known David Johansen for decades, and his music has been a touchstone ever since I listened to the Dolls when I was making ‘Mean Streets,’” Scorsese said in a statement. “Then and now, David’s music captures the energy and excitement of New York City. I often see him perform, and over the years I’ve gotten to know the depth of his musical inspirations. After seeing his show last year at the Café Carlyle, I knew I had to film it because it was so extraordinary to see the evolution of his life and his musical talent in such an intimate setting. For me, the show captured the true emotional potential of a live musical experience.”
The film will reportedly follow Johansen’s arrival in New York’s East Village in the late 1960s and the start of his musical career started in the 1970s as lead singer for the punk/glam pioneers the New York Dolls, along with his role in the swing revival as Buster Poindexter in the 1980s and in the blues as part of the Harry Smiths in the 1990s.
Johansen, 70, is a Staten Island native growing up in West Brighton. The New York Dolls were an American hard rock band formed in New York City in 1971. Known to be one of the first bands on the punk rock scene, New York Dolls are best remembered for their song “Personality Crisis.”
The band aside, Johansen had some solo success in the music industry. His alter ego, Buster Poindexter, and the hit “Hot Hot Hot” marked his career as an influential artist. He had a history of performing at Staten Island hotspots, including the Stapleton bar Redspot.
In 2010, Johansen performed a solo show at The St. George Theatre.
This isn’t Scorsese’s first time directing a film based on influential musicians. The director has previously worked on films including 1971′s “Woodstock,” “The Last Waltz” with The Band,” “Shine a Light’ with The Rolling Stones,” “George Harrision: Living in the Material World,” which earned two Emmys, and “Rolling Thunder Review: A Bob Dylan Story.”
Scorsese earned he earned a Grammy Award for Best Music Film for the Dylan film “No Direction Home.” The director is also well-known for directing the Netflix released “The Irishman,” which filmed on Staten Island in 2017.
There is no released timeline for the project, co-directed by David Tedeschi. Scorsese and Sikelia Productions will executive produce with Brian Grazer, Rick Yorn, Mara Hennessey, Ron Howard and Imagine Documentaries.
