When pictures of the production version of the Nissan Ariya leaked out in April, we knew very little about the automaker’s new all-electric crossover, outside of the fact that it would be competing against the Mustang Mach-E. But then, early this morning, Nissan revealed the new EV to the masses, touting what it calls an exciting, comfortable, and connected vehicle for the new era.
The Nissan Ariya is the brand’s very first all-electric crossover, and it’s part of Nissan’s NEXT initiative, a plan to roll out 10 new models in 20 months to invigorate what has become a rather stale lineup. The model is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in mid-2021, followed by the U.S. and Canada later in the year. U.S. pricing will start around $40,000.
Customers have a range of configurations to choose from, including two-wheel-drive and new “e-4ORCE” all-wheel drive versions, the latter of which uses two electric motors, one at each axle. The front-wheel-drive single motor model delivers an output of 160 kW (215 horsepower) and 221 pound-feet of torque, while the dual-motor all-wheel-drive model is rated at 290 kW (389 horsepower) and 443 pound-feet of torque.
Ariya buyers also have two batteries to choose from – a standard 65 kWh unit, or an optional 90 kWh battery. Level 2 charging provides up to 7.2 kW capability, DC charging is rated at up to 130 kW, and Nissan’s preliminary range estimate is 300 miles. The Ariya rides on Nissan’s newly developed Alliance CMF-EV platform.
Nissan is touting Ariya’s host of technology features as well, including its next-generation ProPILOT Assist 2.0 advanced driver assistance system that uses driver attention monitoring to enable hands-off single-lane highway operation. Ariya will also offer e-Pedal, which allows the driver to start, accelerate, and decelerate using only the accelerator pedal.
In addition, the Ariya comes standard with Nissan Safety Shield 360, a suite of six advanced active safety and driver-assist technologies including Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Rear Automatic Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and High Beam Assist. Ariya will also feature Nissan’s Intelligent Around View Monitor and Intelligent Forward Collision Warning
The Ariya’s styling features what Nissan calls its new “Timeless Japanese Futurism” design language, and the interior is reportedly very spacious thanks to a flat floor and compact climate control components, minimalist controls, and slim-profile Zero Gravity seats.
The Ariya certainly looks like an interesting addition to the fast-growing EV crossover market, and it’ll be interesting to see how it ultimately stacks up against the Mach-E.
