Meet Damson Idris, The South Londoner Taking Hollywood By Storm - British Vogue

Halfway through explaining the difference between a good party and a great one, 28-year-old Damson Idris starts to blush. He’s remembering The Fashion Awards after-party at Laylow last December, and how he was in a booth with A$AP Rocky, Tyler, The Creator and the evening’s host: Rihanna. The singer, he says, told him that her best friend would be so jealous if she knew they were talking. “I shouldn’t be there, I know,” he says, laughing.

Rihanna’s best friend isn’t the only one smitten with the south Londoner. Three seasons into playing an LA drug kingpin on American TV hit Snowfall, he’s about to star in his first big-budget film release, Netflix’s Outside the Wire, as a US Marine; a turn that’s set to make him the next young British actor to win over a global audience.

A front-row regular – spotted at Loewe and Vuitton shows in Paris – Idris admits he loves fashion “a little bit more than acting”. “All I wear is suits,” he says. “I love feeling like Bond.” It’s been that way since he was a child, when his mum would dress him in a three-piece and shiny gold shoes for birthday parties where he would be “twirling my apple juice thinking it was a martini”.

The youngest of six siblings, Idris’s impressions kept the family entertained when life at home was difficult. “I grew up very, very poor,” he says. “But being a kid living in la-la land, you don’t realise you’re having custard for dinner.”

It’s a year since the death of Idris’s mentor, Boyz n the Hood director John Singleton, and it’s left a hole in his life. Thankfully, he often finds himself surrounded by older actors willing to dispense their wisdom. At a dinner in Milan a few months ago, it was Mahershala Ali’s turn to give him the career pep talk he needed. “When he left,” Idris says, “I wanted to call up the first director in my phone and say, ‘Let’s make a movie!’” He should – they’ll be sure to take his call.
